Celebrating 53 years of Ministry!
- Monday, 21 July 2014 19:10
In July, 53 years ago Rev. M.D.”Mom” Beall ordained and sent out my wife’s grandparents to establish a church in a city whose name most people cannot pronounce, Ypsilanti. After many successful years of ministry, Pastors Elton and Judith Weatherly handed the baton over to their daughter and son-in-law, Apostles Leon and Ann Johnson. Over the last four decades the Johnson’s have grown a once small body of people, founded a ministry school, which produced several Pastor’s who went on to establish churches of their own and have groomed their children to serve the one true God. The Johnson’s have exemplified the meaning of being a shepherd.
Possessing the same forethought as their parents, Apostles Leon and Ann set in motion a changing of the guard by setting in their daughter, Rachel, and son-in-law, Norbert to take on the day to day Pastoral responsibilities of Bethesda Church. Although Apostles Leon and Ann are still involved in many ways, most of their attention is now focused on our ministry training school, Biblical Studies Institute. In my opinion, anyone that has had such a triumphant career must be heard. Currently, both are working on books that chronicle the amazing things they’ve seen God do in them and through them.
Churches that have been around for over 50 years are often talked about for what they once were; not what they are now. The Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forevermore; this doesn’t mean the church remains unchanged. Every generation must be reached at their level; methods change but the message does not. We are undergoing a slow and methodical approach to meeting the needs of all the generations in our congregation. Try explaining a tweet to my grandma! But I believe it’s possible to have dynamic worship, dramatic presentations and the Word preached in a manner that crosses all barriers. I thank God for our founders. Rachel and I feel inadequate taking on a church that our Pastors lead. But we know “…that if God be for us, who can be against us…!”
Join us on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s; not to just talk about what God once did, but to experience what He is doing now. We look forward to meeting you…
